Entering Cambodia
At the border, Công collects two whole American dollars from all sitting on the bus. This small bribe will be enough to convince immigration security in Vietnam and Cambodia to let us bypass the normal inspection and move quickly across the border.
The atmosphere in Cambodia is still hot, but so obviously different from the moment we embarked on Highway 1. A seedy international casino industry supports some development in this small part of the region. We drive a few more miles and the true Cambodian countryside reveals itself. A few comparisons on the road in Cambodia: Compared to Vietnam, there are... ...more bicycles but fewer motorbike helmets ...more English on signs to patronize tourists but less money to go around ...more potholes but fewer paved roads ...more water buffalo but fewer families with access to clean water |
